Golden Handcuffs
Torah Tuesday in (exactly) 100 words
I, along with most people I know, struggle with some version of golden handcuffs – not the high-paying career kind, but the kind where we trade away some part of ourselves for the social rewards.
This is what happens to Joseph. He goes to Egypt, enslaved, but then rises. Pharaoh puts a golden chain around his neck. And Joseph, the dreamer, becomes a company man, amassing power and wealth.
It’s a lot safer to act “normal” and play the game that society lays out for us than to be the loving, outlandish freaks of nature that God made us to be.

Every Tuesday I offer a thought on the Torah portion of the week (in 100 words, of course). This week’s Torah portion is MiKeitz (At the End), in the book of Genesis. Please share, comment, and join the conversation!
