A man dies in the desert, leaving behind four daughters, no sons. Countering cultural norms, the daughters boldly petition Moses to be permitted to inherit their father’s land. Moses asks God: should the boys-only inheritance rule apply here? No, says God. The daughters can inherit. Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson taught that we each receive a “portion of land,” meaning a portion of the world that is ours to elevate and heal. Can this sacred mission only be realized through the masculine dimensions of our being? No, says God. We need our whole selves, masculine and feminine, to transform the world.
Every Tuesday I offer a reflection on the Torah portion of the week -- in 100 words, of course. This week’s Torah portion is Pinchas, in the book of Numbers. Please share, comment, and join the conversation!
Beautiful!
